Trade Bait: Pre-2008

In depth analysis of the trades that take place in the majors.

Trade Bait: Bowden gets his man....Again
The Boston Red Sox have been rumored to be getting rid of Wily Mo Pena for some time now.  Their signing of Bobby Kielty sealed Pena’s fate with the team.  This past week he was finally traded to the Washington Nationals in a three-team trade.  Jim Bowden finally got his man….again.
Trade Bait: Braves land another Lefty
In their third move before the deadline, the Atlanta Braves traded for left-handed reliever Royce Ring.
Trade Bait: Red Sox land Gagne
In one of the better moves at the deadline, the Boston Red Sox obtained Eric Gagne to fill out their bullpen.
Trade Bait: Matt Morris to the Pirates?
Matt Morris is now a Pirate?.......really? ........really?
Trade Bait: Betemit for Proctor
The New York Yankees made a move to improve their bench today as they traded overused reliever Scott Proctor to the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit.
Trade Bait: Mackowiak to the Padres
The San Diego Padres are desperate for a bat, so desperate that they are now looking at Rob Mackowiak to help them along.
Trade Bait: Cardinals go for Broke
The Cardinals for some reason think they are still in this thing.  They're going for broke, dealing for....Joel Pineiro?
Trade Bait: Braves win the Teixeira Sweepstakes
After a many intense conversations with various GMs, Rangers’ Jon Daniels settled on the Atlanta Braves offer for his first baseman, Mark Teixeira.
Trade Bait: Indians get Lofton...Again
The Indians love affair with Kenny Lofton continues.
Trade Bait: Phillies get Iguchi
It seemed that almost immediately after Chase Utley went down with a broken hand, the Phillies traded for Tadahito Iguchi.  The Japanese second baseman will be a quick patch for a Philly scraping to stay in the playoff hunt in the National League.
Trade Bait: Cantu to the Reds
The Devil Rays have continued their trading rush, stocking up some additional arms.  With Grant Balfour and Dan Wheeler in the mix, they've set their sites on another couple arms from Cincinnati.
Trade Bait: Wigginton for Wheeler
The Devil Rays have stayed busy in the early going, stocking up some relievers for next year.  First they traded off Seth McClung for Grant Balfour.  Now, they've traded for Dan Wheeler.
Trade Bait: Brewers get McClung
San Diego Padres GM Kevin Towers isn't the only GM that's being aggressive a few days before the deadline.  His former trade partner in the Linebrink deal, Brewers GM Doug Melvin, kept up the dealing as well.  On July 28th Melvin traded for the live-armed Seth McClung.
Trade Bait: Kevin Towers has been Busy
San Diego Padres GM Kevin Towers has been awfully busy lately.  Recently, he traded reliever Scott Linebrink to the Brewers for three relievers, but he didn't stop there.
Trade Bait: Linebrink to the Brewers
The Brewers have been desperate to improve their bullpen over the past couple months.  So desperate that they traded three pitching prospects for Scott Linebrink.
Trade Bait: Teixeira is this year's Big Bat
Teixeira is the big bat on this year's trade market.  Who has the best chance to land him and greatly improve their offense?
Trade Bait: Cubs Dump Barrett
After the Michael Barrett / Carlos Zambrano fracas, someone had to go.  That someone was obviously going to be Barrett.  The Cubs traded Barrett to the San Diego Padres for catcher Rob Bowen and minor league outfielder Kyler Burke.
Beane's a Wheelin' and Dealin'
Billy Beane's been pretty busy lately, he's been wheelin' and dealin' with a few other teams.  But his deals, though minor, have made some scratch their heads.
Trade Bait: Minor Trades
There were a few minor trades over the past month that were interesting to note.
Trade Bait: Pirates get LaRoche
The long-rumored Andy LaRoche to the Pittsburgh Pirates trade finally took place.  Ever since the Winter Meetings the Atlanta Braves and the Pirates were in serious discussions about an Andy LaRoche for Mike Gonzalez swap.  What else did it take to get this deal done?
Trade Bait: Randy Johnson back to AZ
If you were the Arizona Diamonbacks' GM how much would you give up for a 43 year-old pitcher that compiled a 5.00 ERA in 2006?  Billy the Bat Boy would usually be too much, but supposedly not when that pitcher's name is Randy Johnson.
Trade Bait: Mariners get Vidro
"Um.....Why?"
Trade Bait: Jennings becomes an Astro
Rumors had floated around for a week or two that the Houston Astros were trying to get Jason Jennings from the Colorado Rockies.  Well, today they finally got him.  It took a decent amount of talent, but they got him.
Trade Bait: Freddy goes to Philly
It had been well-rumored that the White Sox were looking to deal some of their starting pitching and get younger this off-season.  The trading began with Freddy Gonzalez.
Trade Bait: Braves Land Soriano
The Braves landed Soriano, not Alfonso Soriano though, they traded for the Mariners' Rafael Soriano.  Did the Braves give up much for him though?.......

Ummm...NO!

Trade Bait: Ambiorix Burgos to New York
The wheelin' and dealin' New York Mets GM Omar Minaya completed a trade for another reliever to fill out his bullpen when he dealt for Ambiorix Burgos.
Trade Bait: Brew Crew / D-Backs Swap 6
The Brewers and the Diamondbacks threw together an unspectacular, but interesting deal involving six players.  It's not so much the main players, but he underlying players in this deal that are interesting though.
Trade Bait: Padres get a Ring, Royce Ring
On Wednesday the Padres traded outfielder Ben Johnson and reliever Jon Adkins to the Mets, for left-hander Royce Ring and righty Heath Bell.  Was this an even up trade?
Trade Bait: Josh Barfield
Josh Barfield had a good rookie season in the majors.  So good that he drew the interest of the Cleveland Indians.  But is it an indication of more to come?
Trade Bait: Winners and Losers
This year the non-waiver trade deadline came to an end with a flurry of deals before the mid-afternoon deadline.  Much different than last season's boredom. There was so much activity I decided to just break down the winners and losers.
Padres fill Gap in Center
San Diego Padres general manager continued to be active early in the off-season by acquiring Mike Cameron from the Mets.  Cameron’s Gold Glove abilities in centerfield will be a welcome addition to a Padres outfield that must patrol the expansive confines of PETCO Park.  Did Padres GM Kevin Towers give up too much for Cameron though?
Mets Land Delgado
In his continual search to find high-priced latin talent, Met GM Omar Minaya finally grabbed one of the big fish that got away from him last year.  The Mets acquired Carlos Delgado in a trade with the payroll cutting Florida Marlins.
Trade Bait - Joe Randa
The Padres need help to rise above the rest in the NL Worst...er....West.  Can Joe Randa help with his bat and his presence in the clubhouse?
Trade Bait - Preston Wilson
Preston Wilson has gotten away from the hapless Rockies, but is he what the Nationals need to boost their lackluster offense?
Trade Bait - LaTroy Hawkins
From premier setup reliever signing to closer to focus of ridicule, LaTroy Hawkins has not worked out like Chicago Cubs fans had desired.  Did Cubs GM Andy MacPhail get much for him?
Trade Bait - Riley
The Orioles and Rangers traded former high end prospects.  Once dominant Matt Riley is now pitching for Texas, while Ramon Nivar is looking to find playing time in the Orioles outfield.
Trade Bait - Replace Nomar?
Now that Nomar Garciaparra will be out 2-3 months, or even longer, the Cubs must look down other avenues for production at shortstop.  There are a few options that the Cubs have even though it is a young season and many teams are not ready to bow out and trade players.
Trade Bait - LaTroy Hawkins
From premier setup reliever signing to closer to focus of ridicule, LaTroy Hawkins has not worked out like Chicago Cubs fans had desired.  Did Cubs GM Andy MacPhail get much for him?
