Occasionally, The Baseball Opinion will ask other baseball writers their input on a specific subject.  Their response will be available in our Over a Beer and Peanuts section.

Need some reasoning why a GM made a recent trade?  Don't know anything about the minor leaguers involved?  Want to know who came out the best in the trade (what sportscasters will not say)?  Then go to our Trade Bait section to read through the trade breakdowns.

Brian Bannister Shines

Christopher Solberg, Editor
4/2/2008

Brain Bannister continued his effective pitching from 2007 into this season with his first start by not giving up a run versus a powerful Detroit Tiger offense.  Bannister gave up only two hits over seven innings to lead the Kansas City Royals to a victory against a team that many are predicting to win the AL Central this season.

Bannister, and another GM Dayton Moore acquisition, Gil Meche have started to bring some respectability back to the Royals rotation after years of being knocked around in the American League.

Brian was acquired from the Mets for Ambiorix Burgos in December of 2006.  Burgos pitched somewhat decently out of the Mets’ pen in 2007, putting up a 3.42 ERA in 23-2/3 innings.  But Bannister has been a more viable pitcher for the Royals, giving them 165 innings of 3.87 ERA ball and winning 12 games for a mediocre team.  With Pedro Martinez and Orlando Hernandez injured and Mike Pelfry inconsistency, the Mets are probably wishing they had Bannister back.

Sure the trade was no Victor Zambrano for Scott Kazmir, but it’s sure mud in the face of the Mets.
